There are various issues that come with living in cities:
Overcrowding and Density: High population density common in large cities can lead to feelings of claustrophobia, stress, and social isolation. Overcrowding reduces personal space, increases competition for resources, and can alleviate social tensions and risk of conflict. Lack of Green Spaces: Limited access to parks and natural environments deprives city dwellers of nature’s calming effects, which are proven to reduce stress, improve mood, and support cognitive function. Overload of Stimuli: Cities are filled with constant noise, visual stimuli, and information, which can overwhelm the brain, leading to mental fatigue and a higher risk of mood and anxiety disorders Social Factors: Urban environments often come with greater social inequalities, perceived or real crime, and loneliness, all of which are risk factors for mental health issues
Specifically, in Mumbai and Delhi, both cities face significant challenges with overcrowding, limited green space, and high levels of noise and air pollution. This is due to a rapid increase in certain technology however the government is working towards improving standards. These factors contribute to higher stress and mental health risks for residents.
There are many things people can do to improve their mental health in cities. One can take advantage of green areas near where they live, and spend free time with friends. As well as this, having a pet can help anyone in a city feel less alone.
